OpenAI says an employee walked out with 100+ device files. A lawsuit found it.

By alkizz ·

In an Oct 14 filing in Apple's trade-secrets suit, OpenAI says a former employee who came from Apple, stayed six months, and went back sent "over a hundred highly confidential files" about an unreleased device to his personal accounts. Some went out just after midnight on his last day, June 2. OpenAI says it learned this from "a recent and ongoing forensic investigation arising from this lawsuit." Apple says it has found no evidence supporting the claim. These are allegations, not findings.

The part that matters to you: by OpenAI's own account, the files left in June and it found out months later because litigation made someone look. That's not detection. That's discovery, in the legal sense.

We are truly in the dumbest timeline. The most famous AI lab on earth, and the alleged play is the oldest one in the book: forward the files to yourself on your last day.

What to do: Alert on bulk sends and uploads to personal accounts, and review departing employees' activity before their access ends, not after the lawsuit.
